This is how The Invention of Hugo Cabret begins. How mysterious and, dare we say, cinematic. Hugo is desperate to get it back, and the two artisans become locked together in a strange destiny: Hugo’s secret and the old toymaker’s secret are part of a large, wonderful, sad story that promises a brighter future for both of them, if they can just work out the mystery together. The narrator (who knew there was a narrator?) says that the curtains on this story are drawing to a close and it’s fading to black, but that this leads us to another story. Here the story takes an interesting turn, stepping outside of the narrative we’ve been following along with.Oh hello, man on the moon! We see a drawing of the moon with quite the human face on it, and a rocket (or something) plunged into its right eye socket. ![]()
